MUMBAI: Each Congress and BJP leaders in Maharashtra on Wednesday criticised the removing of Sai Baba statues from some temples in Varanasi, saying disrespect to the 19th century saint from the state shouldn’t be tolerated.

State BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated Sai Baba was a revered determine and no one ought to be allowed to insult him. “This (marketing campaign to take away his statues) ought to cease,” he added. Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat stated Sai Baba was above caste, creed and faith. “What has occurred in Varanasi is unlucky, ” he stated. 

Santan Rakshak Dal, a Hindu outfit, has launched a marketing campaign to take away Sai Baba statues from temples in Varanasi with some spiritual leaders claiming that he was not a deity and shouldn’t be worshipped. 

Sai Baba spent a lot of his life at Shirdi in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district. A temple devoted to him at Shirdi attracts lakhs of devotees yearly.
