Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar mentioned on Tuesday that exit polls are inflicting distractions and emphasised that this is a matter for the press to mirror on and focus on.
Reacting to the current failure of exit polls to foretell the outcomes of the Haryana Meeting and Lok Sabha elections, he mentioned, “A significant distortion is being created attributable to exit polls and the expectations they set. This can be a matter for the press to mirror on, particularly the digital media. In the previous few elections, a number of issues have occurred concurrently.”
“First, an exit ballot is launched—we don’t management it… However there’s a want for self-introspection, what was the pattern measurement, the place was the survey achieved, how did the consequence come and what’s my accountability if I didn’t match to that consequence, are there disclosures – all of those should be seen,” he added.
Whereas asserting the election schedule for Jharkhand and Maharashtra, the Chief Election Commissioner said that ballot counting would start at 8:30. He questioned whether or not the preliminary developments are getting used to justify the exit polls.
“There are our bodies which govern this…I’m positive the time has come that Associations/Our bodies which govern, will do some self-regulation…Counting occurs roughly on the third day after the elections finish. Expectations rise from 6 pm…however there isn’t any scientific base to this in public disclosure. When counting begins, outcomes begin pouring at 8.05-8.10 am. That is nonsense. The primary counting (of EVMs) begins at 8.30 am…Are the preliminary developments to justify the Exit Ballot?…We begin placing the outcomes at 9.30 am on the web site…So, when the precise outcomes begin coming in, there’s a mismatch. That mismatch can result in critical points generally,” he added.
Kumar additional said that the hole between expectations and achievements results in frustration and this subject requires cautious deliberation.
