The primary offshore IIT campus might be established in Zanzibar in Tanzania. IIT Madras would be the first IIT to arrange an abroad campus. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in between Ministry of Training (MoE), Authorities of India, IIT Madras and Ministry of Training and Vocational Coaching (MoEVT) Zanzibar-Tanzania on July 5, 2023. The MoU was additionally signed within the presence of Dr. Hussain Ali Mwini, President of Zanzibar and Dr. S. Jaishankar, Overseas Minister of India.
