NEW DELHI: Surrey efficiently defended their County Championship title, claiming the trophy for a 3rd time in six years on Thursday.
Surrey secured the title after taking an unassailable lead within the standings as Essex have been bowled out of their remaining sport of the season.
A 20-point hole between the highest two Division One groups heading into the ultimate spherical of four-day fixtures meant Surrey required simply 5 factors to carry on to their crown.
Essex’ failure to take any batting bonus factors towards Hampshire left the door barely ajar for them as they wanted to publish a 400-plus rating in 110 overs at Wantage Street to maintain the title race alive.
However in response to Northamptonshire’s 369, Essex have been all out for 211, which meant they may not catch Surrey, who can have a good time their fifth championship crown because the flip of the century.
London-based Surrey are first facet to retain the first-class title since Yorkshire, who received back-to-back crowns in 2014 and 2015.
